I'd like to be the first to nominate Johnny Holland for Defensive Coordinator once we part ways with Richard Smith (when ever and however that happens). I do not believe that Smith will be brought back after his contract is up, though i am not sure when that will be. Smith has done well at installing the 4-3 for us and helping to get us the players to run it, but now we need someone who can bring our defense together and work as a cohesive unit instead of 3 independent groups. Holland emphasizes this point with his linebacking corps. When the entire defense is on the same page then they can work more smoothly in blitz packages and in coverage. I also would love to have a guy who comes into his position already familiar with the players and system, instead the alternate option where the new guy has to do countless hours of research and film study to get caught up. Not to mention Holland, having been with us for several years when this situation will hopefully happen, im sure will have several ideas about how he might tweak a few things after having had a view from the inside.

I also like the fact that Mr. Holland honestly feels we are doing something here, and that he feels committed to Kubiak. It can be hard to find some one who will stick to their word these days.

I appreciate the job Richard Smith has done, but he is not our Greg Williams or Jim Johnson. I dont know if Johnny Holland is either, but i like what i see and hear. And if nothing else i personally feel that he would be a better DC for the Texans. Thank you for reading my opinion.

Johnny is a great coach and a great guy - he turned down a DC position at A&M to stay here and coach LBs - but I think Frank Bush is next in line for the DC spot here.

What happens if Richard Smith turns it around this year? Hopefully he will realize this is a make or break season for his future employment with the Texans.

I thought the consensus on this board was that the coaches get a pass for last year due to injuries? That dosen't go for Smith as well?

I'd say it must. But, Bush would be nice, or we can have Buddy Ryan call in plays from home...

God, Ryan as DC...if he didn't get in a fight with Kubes...would be insane.

I said this before but, can you imagine this conversation.

BR: Mario, get your a@@ over here!

MW: Yes coach?

BR: You have 1 job son, we will open the holes in the line. You kill the QB!

MW: Ok coach!

BR: No, i said KILL THEM...I WANA SEE MANNING UNDER THE TURF!

MW: Yes Sir!

BR: Now, go bring me his throwing arm. Got that?

MW: Yes sir, consider it done.

Man, with a guy like Ryan...I'd feel bad for anyone who has a football around our D.

You forgot the part where he puts the $10,000 bounty on putting Manning out for the season. Or $50,000 if you make him retire.

Smith has had a pass for two seasons primarily because of talent and depth. I think he has enough of both to put forth a good NFL defense in '08. If this group can't finish in the top half of the league in yards, points, sacks, takeaways, etc., then it's time to change in '09. There are several very good and experienced coaches on this defense behind him and at some point the leader has to be held accountable. This is the year imo.

+1

If Smith is not able to get better results with the talent we've accumulated then it'll be time to make a coaching change IMO. Bush would be the natural choice.

Well on the quotes, Kubiak says that Holland will be calling in the plays to Demeco. I'm not sure how to interpret that. Will he decide what plays to call? Or is he just relaying the message from Smith?

We figure Lil Shanahan tells Kubiak the play but Kubiak has override power.

Does Holland have the same power?

Just to play the 'devil's advocate"....does that go for Kubes as well? Is the concensus that it's time for Kubes to put up or move on this year?

I think Kubes is safe until there are two years of consecutive regression. If the team has an off year and cannot bounce back the year after that, then i think he has 1 year to make significant improvements or he is in hot water.
