View Full Version : Houston, we have a paradox

I was cruising around SI's NFL page, and was reading some articles that I had missed. Two were by Bucky Brooks, and I noticed him contradicting himself in two of his articles.
The earlier article was his ranking of the top 25 WRs in the NFL (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/bucky_brooks/06/25/top.receivers/index.html), where he had AJ ranked 6th, and here's what he said:
6. Andre Johnson, Houston Texans: The Texans' "one-man show" hauled in 103 receptions without a legitimate threat on the other side. With an outstanding combination of size, speed and strength, Johnson overpowers smaller defenders in one-on-one match-ups. Though he is sure to see a lot of double coverage, he should see his production rise with new quarterback Matt Schaub under center.
Second is a more recent article where he lists 3 big TC challenges for each team (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/bucky_brooks/07/04/tc.preview.afc.south/index.html). The photo is of AJ, and the caption for it says "Andre Johnson may find it hard to reproduce his 1,100-yard receiving season in '06 without another threat across the field."
My head is spinning trying to figure this one out...
Note I'm not trying to razz him or criticize him. His TC challenges were definitely fair (Make Schaub comfortable in the offense, Find another receiving threat, Get better play out of the DL), and his assessments weren't biased or hateful. I just love how he contradicted himself.

he isn't saying anything we haven't said ourselves.
we all agree that he needs someone to emerge as a bonafide #2 threat so he won't be double-teamed all the time. Everytime some WR gets cut there's a thread wondering if he's a fit for our offense.
And on the "Which Texans wil make the pro bowl thread?" Everyone listed Andre Johnson. So we all believe he'll be as productive, if not more, as he was last year.
The "increase in production" I suspect will show up in AJ's YAC numbers. They will rise with Schaub because Matt hits WRs on time and in stride, as AJ himself said, "you don't have to wait on Matt's ball..." And if AJ catches the ball with a head of steam, then maybe he runs over the CB and outruns the safety...
I get misty-eyed just thinking about it...

I love Bucky's assessment of the rest of the conference; especially Tennessee's.
Bennett & Wade gone, that's half of Tennessee's rcvg yds and 5 TDs gone
Travis Henry gone, 1200+ of their 2200 rushing yds and 7 TDs gone
Their only shutdown CB suspended for the year
No one to fill the return void 9 (3 more TDs)...
that's 15 of their 36 TDs gone...
Its gonna be a loooong year for Mutt & Jeff's ...err, I meant Bud & Jeff's boys.

They should name their Offense "Vince Young and the High School All-Stars".

Bucky does contradict himself a little but I liked both articles. He's pretty much right on the money with his assesments. And in the TC Challenges article, even though the caption under the pic raises a question about AJ's production, he doesn't imply anthing negative in his breakdown.
We all know that AJ could possibly be hindered by the lack of a true proven #2 WR, but seriously, how is that different than any other yr he's been in the league? He's NEVER had a #2 option other than Moulds, and he was only an after thought for a QB that regressed in his development and relied heavily on AJ.
If you ask me I think the experience with all of the double coverage is key for AJ. He's proven he can still produce at a high level and has learned to develop his game around it and still be hugely successful (the only thing he's missing are the TDs to show for it). That experience will prove to be invaluable in the bigger picture. Just imagine what our guy will be able to do once other players are utilized, on a consistent basis, in our offense. We now have a QB that can see two halves of a field and I can't stress that enough. I think Walter can be effective on the other side, at least enough to keep defenses honest. I honestly believe the "lack of a true #2" stuff is a bit over-hyped. AJ will be fine as long as he stays healthy.

Put it in other words, Vince Young is destined to grow old very quickly over the next year.............that is, if he doesn't get "killed" first.

The irony will be a bit thick if theTennessee QB can't get it done because of a lack of weapons around him. It would be interesting to watch that unfold because that type of thing just isn't possible - or so we're led to believe.

Well now you know why I don't have a job with ESPN. I'm a heretic. I don't blindly follow the "gospel" according to Rev. Jaws and Bishop HairGel. And I'm not a true believer in either Prince Vince nor Reggie the Annointed One.
I realize that's blasphemy. I expect that my cable will be struck by lightning any second now.

I hate, "Houston, we have a ..." **** you Tom Hanks and Apollo13. No saying in the world aggravates me more than this. Even though it is not the person on this site, it seems like everytime a Houston team looses, a fan from another team comes on a site andsays it like we have never heard it before. Die "Houston, we havea ..." DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!![:@]
