LIONS BOUNCE BELL
Posted by Mike Florio on September 1, 2008, 6:51 p.m.

A league source tells us that the Detroit Lions cut veteran running back Tatum Bell in order to make room for veteran running back Rudi Johnson.

It’s possible that the Texans will sniff around Bell. As we hear it, the Texans were very interested in Johnson, who inked with the Lions before getting a chance to check out Houston.

Bell was traded to the Lions in 2007 as part of the deal that sent cornerback Dre’ Bly to Denver.

Haha are we going to be linked to every FA RB out there? And just because Bell is a former Bronco means we're gonna sign him or bring him in? haha wow:o And oh yeah it says we were "very" interested in Rudi Johnson? haha really? Last I heard we werent interested in him nor did we even bring him in for a visit, but yet we were "very" interested in him. Talk about making us look desperate for a RB/running game.

I thought we WERE interested in him and in fact had scheduled him in for a visit. He signed with Detroit before he had a chence to come here. Least that's what I recall.

I doubt we will be signing any other vet backs right now yall. Especially someone who was cut by the Lions to make room for Hammy Johnson.

Haha to that:D Who knows though, we'll see what happens first Foxworth or Bell or neither.

LOL So who are they going to cut if this happens? Doesn't sound good for Taylor if this happens or Ahman Green.

in his presser Kubiak says Green has been practicing for two weeks and is "ready to go" and that Slaton and Taylor will get carries. Neither Green or Taylor are in trouble.

But if this is true they are going to get him, then they surely need to cut someone. Common sense says it would be a running back.

no that's not what common sense would say it would be washburn who got cut. we have more than enough OL.

texans need 4 backs with green's injury concerns and a lack of experience behind him.

Nah we haave 7 or 8 tackles. I'm sure it would be a tackle that goes.

Yeah Washburn already got cut though. Rashad Butler, Brandon Frye?

IMO this would be a good signing.

Positives

1. He knows the offensive system.
2. He is in football shape.
3. He is a veteran without too many miles and injuries.

Negatives

1. He is not a very big.
2. He is similar to Slaton (we already have one).

Any other comments as to why signing Bell would or would not be a good move?

I totally agree. Atlanta gets him for a 7th round pick (with incentives)! Why the hell did we not look into this?

Is this going to be the pattern for the whole season? Every time a back comes available it means that the Texans are the obvious team for them. Can we at least see how they do in regular season first. Let us not push every panic button before the season starts. I have seen defensive line threads, qb threads and about a billion ( insert RB name here) threads. People can we wait just umm 5 days until the RB situation is addressed. If we get 0 yds then panic, but until then can yall ease up on the same rehashed topic.

i read from several different sources we were very interested in rudi johnson. just because we didn't sign him doesn't mean we weren't. he bypassed a trip to houston and signed with the lions during there meeting.

O rly? Im not trying to be sarcastic or anything here but what other sources? And well if he bypassed us, he didnt have too great of an interest to play here, and I guess we werent TOO interested to try and convince him to come stop for a visit. Oh well, Tatum Bell will be on his way here shortly. Just speculation.

again just because he wasn't interested in playing here doesn't mean we weren't interested in signing him. he took the first offer. it happens everyday in free agency.

I totally agree. Everyone was so high on Taylor and Slaton. That is who we have and everyone is wanting to just grab the 1st available 4 days before the season starts. Like you said lets see what Green, Taylor and Slaton do before we panic. Plus we do have Walker on the PS if we need to bring him up. He deserves the chance before any outsider does IMO.

For me it isn't about waiting to see if these young guys can do it. I'm all for it. They are the only ones out of the four that showed any real progress. For me it is the emergency situation. It's about the fact that we can't really depend on Green right now. If Green was able to show that he could last a full season, I would be real confident. But right now I am thinking as if all we have is Slaton and Taylor and noonelse back there. I want to feel better about that. Having a good experienced guy can make that happen.

Well what were we gonna do, sign a guy we're interested in though who isnt interested in playing for us? Doubt that..and he took the first offer? I thought you said he first bypassed a trip here to Houston and went to Detroit and then signed. So technically we were the first offer, but then again not since he bypassed us. And I doubt that ^that happens everyday in FA. Many FAs dont sign on their first offer. They like to explore the market and see whats out there, but Im not gonna ramble on. Hes signed, sealed, and delivered to Detroit. Good Luck to him.

I agree. The only backs on the roster we can depend on, at this time, are Taylor and Slaton at RB and Leach at FB. It is highly doubtful that Green will last more than a few games - if that. I don't know much about Tatum Bell but our FO does and if they believe he is a good acquisiton and we can get him for the right price, I don't see a down side. We know that the FO is scouring the waiver wire for a RB and this guy seems to be a good fit.

I know we can't really tell what Green's health will be like this season but I would hope that we won't be so desperate to consider someone that Detroit cut as a posititve solution for our running back problems.

you can't possibly be this dumb.

He was going to have a meeting with Houston after his meeting with Detroit. Detroit made an offer. He took it.

In the NFL when you have a week before the first game. And a new city to settle down in and a new offense to learn. 98% of free agents sign with the first offer they get. It's no time to weigh out your options and be picky.

The Texans will sign a vet. RB after the 1st game.

It has something to do with not having to pay for a full season.

After the 1st game a vet. player gets paid game to game week to week.
