At 285 pounds and a 40 time of 5.2, Kubiak may have other plans for this guy, otherwise I agree.......probable camp fodder.

Camp fodder? Maybe...
from NFLScout.com 2006 draft class
One of the more interesting positional switches of the off-season was Thomas Smith's move from DE to DT with Dave Wannstedt envisioning a quicker, sleeker defensive unit, Smith's move could provide Pitt with a tenacious and quick-htting playmaker on the interior - brings excellent athleticism to the tackle spot, a fact not lost on positional coach Bob Junko. "Thomas brings a lot of potential to his new position because of his athletic ability", Junko said. I like his quickness. He can really get off the ball. He's an intense competitor and we expect him to be a leader for us." One of the team's most passionate and fiery players, Smith figures to be a spark from an emotional standpoint as well.
Plays both DT and DE.... If he's still "hungry" he may push some of the desparation pickups (or a certain 1st round choice) from last year back out onto the street.
We'll see.
I wish they'd give Sammy Knight a call. He's one of the better true FS still walking the streets. He probably won't play for the league min, but he sure could help train the youngsters. I would have rather seen that than picking up Bethel Johnson.

I thought he was a SS and a solid tackler, but I thought K.C. went younger because Sammy was starting to lose a step?

You're right. He is a SS.
I don't really like that "get younger" mentality though. That's the same logic Casserly used to dismantle our defense after 2004 - which was pretty dang good that year. We dumped Sharper, Glenn, and others and traded for Buchanon. We all know what happened in '05.
