1) Free Safety - CC Brown just has got to improve this year.
2) Wide Reciever - Put Walters at 3rd down posession reciever and bring in a starter
3) Left Tackle - We've never had a solid starter at that position
(Honorable mention for 4th and 5th respectively goes to a starting running back and a weak side line backer)

Stop by Walmart. That place has everything at a good price.
Where do you expect to find a starting WR at a price we can afford?
With regards to the other two, I think we addressed that as much as we could the last few months. What we have is what we are going forward with at this point...
..unless you want to be the first official "need" thread for the 2008 off-season?

1.) i can see this as something we would like to upgrade. this yearwill be a make or break season for C.C. playing FS for the texans nextyear.
2.) #2 WR most of the time have been possesion WR. largetarget with good hands that are willing to go over the middle. why would you have a guy on your team just for 3rd downs? he isnta RB
3.) LT has yet to be determined at this point. big nastylooked to be the LT we were looking for, and it is just a matter of ifhe can come back at full strength. i can see this as a coin toss inregards to us needing a LT. plus we did draft frye, who fitsright in the mold of what a ZBS LT should be. but i see frye asmore of an insureance policy for spencer that we can developeover this year to take over as LT next year from salaam or black.
to your honerable mentions: ahman green will be fine in ourscheme. he knows the scheme, he knows how to read the blocks andwhere to cut and get upfield. we dont have to have a speedster ora power back in this scheme. just a back that is patient, and canfind the hole and get upfeild.
now what is wrong with greenwood as our WLB? he had 110 totaltackles this past season with 84 solo and 26 assisted. he may notbe the one the best WLB, but for a LB who played in a 3-4; he made ahell of transition as a 4-3 LB. he excelled and made playssideline to sideline just like he should. he is also a very goodcoverage LB that helps us when we need a LB to cover TE's. i dontsee why you would want to replace a player in his 7th season as a pro.he is in his prime now, just doesnt make much sense to dump him, unlesshe implodes this season.
While I will agree with you about FS, it was injuries to the whole line, defense and offense, plus C arr quitting on us, last year that doomed any hope of being over .500 for the season.
Salaam the salami did a pretty fair job of filling in at OLT when rookie Spencer got hurt. WR we thought we had pretty much taken care of until our ex Buffalo decided to just mail it in in his last year.
So in summary the only thing you can really point your finger at is FS, and I'm still kinda scratchin my head as to why we didn't do more to resolve that in this years draft.

You are correct. I'm looking at 2008.
I am excited about one thing next year... Us have a HUGE cap room, and MR Turner (best Pirates of the Carribean accent) {backup RB of the Chargers} being a free agent. Arrrrrrrrrrr

next year we should be able to address a lot of needs

1. Corner
2. L or R Tackle, depending on what we need (who doesn't step up)
3. Maybe a FS
Other than that, I think that most of this is a wait and see situation. I think that a lot of things have been addressed and we just have to see if they can step up or not.

Maybe we get lucky and Harrison or Mitchell turn out to be the DeMeco of the Secondary.
Maybe Big Nasty makes it back stronger than ever.
Maybe Green has the best season of his career.
Maybe Schaub turns out to be the QB Payton Manning would most like to be like.
Maybe this kind of thinking is an alternative form of Fantasy Football.
My take on the secondary last year was more a lack of communication rather than a lack of talent. Injuries didn't help much either. Hopefully, their noses have been in the playbooks all offseason and things improve back there. Plus with the 1-2 punch on the D-Line now, they will get some more help from up front. IMO we are about 2 to 3 players away from having a truely scarry defense.

Top Three Texans' Needs - for 2007 Season
1. Create more turnovers. The only time in our history we were on the plus side in turnover differential was 2004 (+5 - we had 22 INTs and 8 fumble recoveries). Amazingly enough, that was also the closest we came to .500 or better ball. Coincidence? I think not. The one time we beat the Colts, we created a turnover that allowed us to get up 14-zip. Note to Richard Smith: Teach a "first guy tackle, second guy strip" defensive mindset. Nothing fires up our side and demoralizes their side like getting turnovers.
2. Go deep early and often. Let's seeeee... AJ, Charlie Anderson, David Anderson, Andre Davis, Jacoby Jones, Bethel Johnson, Onrea Jones, Jerome Mathis, Terry Richardson (man, there's a 4 x 100 relay team in there somewhere)... One of the many "speed" guys we have at WR must to step up and present himself as a deep threat. Two would be better. You would think we could find 2 or 3 keepers among this bunch to put out there with AJ and OD. Please Sherm, let's stretch the field.
3. Solidify the defensive backfield. I'm not sure, given the guys on the roster, if this objective can be done this year. And I'm beginning to think shutdown CBs and ball-hawking FSs are born, not made. If we spend any of our cap money next year, I'd do what it takes to sign some speedy cover guys who are also big hitters. Maybe one of the youngsters will surprise us.

WR - Johnson @ #1, Draftee @ #2, Jones & Walter split for #3 = powerhouse air game.
FS - Bennet will show us great things, mark my words, and I'm hoping Harrison will do the same.
LT - Sorry but we just need someone we can count on...(reffering to someone not injury prone)
4 & 5 are: a 3rd linebacker (personally I think Orr sucks), and a young, fast round 1 RB draft pick

vinny, are you predicting we won't have a pass rush this year? I'm pretty hopeful that we will. Furthermore, it is my contention that Faggins will be highly productive at CB with some safety help and a solid pass rush. My only concern with our CBs are the guys behind him: fletcher, bennett.... I just haven't seen enough of them to know what we have.

Agree. Therefore - 1) other teams will continue to exploit the Texans weak secondary, 2) Schaub will not have much an alternative other than Andre (resulting in an accusation that he only looks at one reciever), and 3) Schaub will continue to have poor protection from the the left side. If Ahman Green gets banged up, well....it will look a lot like last year guys.

I don't think Spencer could be labeled "injury proned" being that a 250+ lbs RB ran right up his *** and broke his leg. If he had not had that freak accident, he would, and maybe still is, our LT for years to come.
Seems like everyone we've ever put at LT got nicked up or was totally lost to us (and you're right, Dayne cost us Spencer. He still has to atone for that, imo.) Salaam played hobbled most of the 2nd part of the year - even so, he was the steadiest of the rest. Winston got nicked up and probably wasn't (isn't?) ready to start at LT. Whether Black makes good or Spencer returns (please, please, please!) remains to be seen. ...sometimes I wonder: is there a Boselli curse?!
But I don't think we'll see the sack totals we saw last year. Between better decision making at QB and RBs that know how to block I think we'll be much improved in that dept.
Kubiak made a point of saying that Charlie Anderson could well take Orr's job. Between that and having a whole year in Smith's defense we should be more solid at LB. Bringing in Barber & Clark for situational duty should help too. And defense is as much about play calling as it is about personnel. Smith needs to blitz more often.... from everywhere. Seems like he hardly blitzed at all the first part of last year.

1) Free Safety - CC does not cut it
2) LB next to Demeco - Meco cant do it alone
3) CB - Robinson has had 2 horrible years since Glenn left.

I'm not going to assume we are good in these areas until proven we are good in these areas. Until proven we have resolved these issues I think that they are the biggest issues for the team heading into camp. Our secondary isn't strong enough to hold up if we don't get a good rush. We have AJ and a cast of thousands at WR...hopefully at least one of the guys develops into a quality NFL starter.

We need to get rid of TJ
We need a 2nd receiver
We need a safety...

I expect good things from the Texans this year but, barring injury to Brown, I would be hugely surprised if Bennett ends up in the starting lineup this year. A lot of posters apparently have great fairh in him, but it doesn't seem to me to be very realistic to believe an undrafted player is going to beat out a returning starter. I think it is much more realistic to think that with more pressure from the front four, and with another year of experience, Brown will look somewhat better this year.
If I am wrong about Bennett, I will be the first to admit it. I would love for the Texans to get a solid starter who they would be paying the league minimum for and who didn't cost them a draft pick. I just don't see it happening.

1. AMEN!!!
2. Solid and consistent running game will open up the passing but you're right we need to stretch the field more often.
3. We all know our DBs weren't playing up to expectations and while there maybe many reasons why they didn't...the bottom line is that they still didn't perform...I think we should reedeem ourselves with the Raiders and snag one of their many talented safeties....they have more than they will keep and we are slightly bloated at DL..they need DL help
