A great article by John McClain (Houston Chronicle) - http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/fb/texansfront/4659215.html
Moon on Texans QB
"Houston fans are great. They deserve a winner. They've waited long enough. I hope the Texans turn it around next season."
Moon has followed the Texans and quarterback David Carr since their first season in 2002. Now he is going to keep a close eye on Matt Schaub, Carr's replacement.
"I thought the Texans would have been successful by now, but they made some questionable decisions," he said. "Hopefully, this (Schaub trade) will help them turn the corner.
"When I saw what the Texans gave up for Schaub, at first I was a little shocked, but the more I thought about it, I could see it because the quarterback position is just so vital. Nothing's guaranteed in the draft. Look at what's happened to Carr and Joey Harrington."
Carr and Harrington, the first and third picks in the 2002 draft, are on the street.
"It's hard to find a good one," Moon said. "When a coach and general manager think they've found one they want, they should do whatever it takes to get him. That's what the Texans did."
Pastorini on Kubiak
When Dan Pastorini played quarterback for the Oilers (1971-79), one of his ball boys at training camp was Gary Kubiak.
"I believe Gary will turn the Texans around," he said. "He's a classy guy and a very proud man who doesn't like to lose.
"He was an ideal backup quarterback all those years. He was very successful as an assistant coach. But when he played and was an assistant coach, he had a lot of talent around him. Hopefully, the Texans will put a lot of talent around their new quarterback (Matt Schaub).
"I'll tell you one thing about the Texans: When Kubiak gives advice, the players better listen because he's been through the wars as a player and as a coach."
Me on Houston QB's
Schaub will become another great quarterback for this city. Houston has a nack for getting great QB's; Warren Moon, Dan Pastorini, Giff Nielson & now Schaub!

I'm hoping Domanick Davis' knee will hold up this year. Jonathan Wells, Tony Hollings, and Stacey Mack just aren't getting it done.

Warren Moon's wife deserves a winner.
Which one? Felicia, the ex (they split in 2001, try to keep up) or Mandy, his current wife?

Warren Moon's wife deserves a winner.
I am willing to bet the former Mrs. Moon is happy with her bank account. Moon was a winner. I don't think you lived in that house so don't go there!

Since we're on the subject of Moon, and not Pastorini.......
I was always disappointed that the Oilers never made it to the big dance with #1 at QB. IMO Moon is the best QB Houston has ever seen. He ran one of the most complicated offenses to perfection and threw the most beautiful deep passes. I was stoked when he was accepted into the HOF. I don't care about the domestic stuff.
Moon is the best QB Houston has ever seen.
No question. Some may argue Blanda because of the AFL championships but I can't comment on him or Charley Johnson, but I saw all the rest from Pastorini to Steve McNair (through '96) and Moon was by far the best.
Jim Kelly wasn't bad either.

Moon may have thrown the prettiest passes in NFL history. He threw perfect spirals and they were catchable, not the 100 mph short passes that some "great thowers" often toss.
However, Moon is a big reason the Oilers were known as chokers. He would often stake the team to a big lead, but then would do nothing in the second half except fumble, throw interceptions, get sacked, and otherwise not run the clock while guys like John Elway, Joe Montana, and even Frank Reich would take over in the second half.
People often blame the Oilers defense for those collapses, and while they do deserve most of the blame, if Moon and the "unstoppable" offense did anything...ANYTHING...in the second half of those games the Oilers would have been to at least one Super Bowl in the 90's.
Moon didn't have the 'rise to the occasion' gut of a champion, but when you don't have a fullback or tight end on your roster and your base set is four wides, it's sometimes hard to run clock.
Don't try to re-write history too much. The KC meltdown was as much or more on Buddy than it was anyone. I recall the Oilers giving up three TDs in the 4th quarter of that one while scoring 10 points of their own.

Giff Nielson??????
Hey CND, different subject but have you been watching Robert Meacham's recovery at all? I was curious about what you thought about a 'routine' scope to repair a cartilage tear. Supposedly he's 'ahead of schedule.'
Saints | Meachem to undergo surgery - from www.KFFL.com
Mon, 4 Jun 2007 16:28:05 -0700
Adam Schefter, of the NFL (http://www.kffl.com/team/77/nfl) Network, reports the New Orleans Saints (http://www.kffl.com/team/25/nfl) WR Robert Meachem (http://www.kffl.com/player/16063/nfl) (knee) will undergo arthroscopic surgery to repair torn knee cartilage that was discovered during a recent magnetic resonance imaging test. Meachem is scheduled to have the surgery Tuesday, June 5, and is expected to miss up to four weeks of action.

The only " star " Moon had was Jeffires...
Duncan ? White ? Givins ?
meh...
Yeah, those five 1000 yard seasons, six time top ten in receiving yards, two Pro Bowls and 50 TDs from Drew Hill was just because of the system..

Yeah, those five 1000 yard seasons and 50 TDs from Drew Hill was just a bunch of garbage time stuff...
Yeah, you got me on Hill, but my point was that when you think of elite NFL weapons ( esp. at WR ) The names Drew Hill, Haywood Jeffries, and Curtis Duncan don't really sound " up there " with the likes of Jerry Rice, Tim Brown, Cris Carter, ect, ect..
I was responding to your comment that Jeffires was Moon's 'only star.' (which is a bit ridiculous).
When you start throwing around Jerry Rice's name, that eliminates about 99% of the receivers to ever play the game from the discussion.

Wow, I forgot about Drew Hill. He was great - My bad. The run-n-shoot offense had 4 wide outs almost every play so the ball was spread around more than a west coast offense? It is a read and react offense with the QB and each receiver based on the defensive coverage and matchups. Jerry Rice, Tim Brown and Cris Carter may not have had as many yards in the r-n-s.

Jerry Rice, Tim Brown and Cris Carter may not have had as many yards in the r-n-s.
using that logic, it could be said that Hill, Duncan, and Jeffries would have been washouts without the r-n-s, due to the fact that there WERE 4 WR's always on the field and Moon was always throwing.
honestly, look at the production drop after Moon left to Minnesota.
Houston needs a qb. They had one. What many of the fans do not realize is that they had a leader in Dave Carr. I just don't get the rationalizing of why the management just let him go. Think of two qb's that sort of put you in to mind of leaders on the feild. Take Fran Tarkenton. Played for the Giants, and the Vikes(twice). A true leader on and off the feild. But NEVER won a super bowl.
Another great qb....Dan Marino. Did everything he could to win the big one. Set all kinds of records. But, he ,like Fran, couldn't get it dine.
But, let us not blame these two fine athletes, who in their time, played to the egde of the fine line.
Also, let us all remember, too, that the lineman that they though against, were not as big as the monsters of today.
Alright, now that I am done babbling, let's get to the point. Dave Carr is a great qb. He STILL is learning. He is in the prime of his career. And trust me, he WILL elevate the game. And he WILL elevate the way the Panthers play.
The Texans do not know what they have lost. Okay, I'm not from the area. I live in the Pittsburgh area, and I work out in the gym with a die hard Texans fan. I know how much that Houston wants a winner. Before the Steelers ever had a winner, they had over THIRTY YEARS of LOSING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So, Texans fans, I do believe that within the next few years, you WILL see a winner in Houston. And I do believe that you will see a good product on the feild. The die hard fans deserve a winner. And I believe it is just around the corner.

So, they did not have the linemen of today? Thus, Carr should of produced? Am I missing something?
Warren Moon was pretty darn good. Dan Patorini did not have Pittsburgh's line, but had the real leadership; something that most would say Warren did not have.
Carr did not even produce a winning season. But can we blame the QB (alone) for this? Not exactly. But one thing you look for are those great comeback games & winning seasons. I'm not high on John Elway, but it is obvious he had something & that is exactly what the fans want! You cannot win them all.
When it starts to smell, it is time to take out the Carrbage. I give the Texans organization to make the tough call. We needed a QB!
There is something about Schaub. The team is making a hugh investment here. There is something here & it is not exactly clear right now. Just waiting for gameday!

Good luck tying to convince very many people here of that. No offense but I think that statement goes way beyond hopeful enthusiasm and borders on delusional.

It's not just the fans that didn't realize Carr was a leader.
His teammates on the Texans didn't realize it either.
If Carr wasn't able to convince his teammates that he was a leader, how much of a leader could he have been?
