I made a post yesterday on the offensive stats and someone requested to see the defensive stats so here it is. Before I begin I just wanted to note my intention was never to brag about stats and say its better than others , It's merely a way to realize that despite the 0-4 record we are in fact a better and improving team. This is for you fans to put things into perspective and maybe give yourself some hope? All you haters I am not making them up its from NFL.com ... with that been said Realize that last year our defense was ranked #24 right now week 5 #18. Not much of a big jump but its a jump and we know we are seeing improvements (secondary needs work) but overall they are improved.

On to the stats....

Amongst the 32 teams

Defense

Total Yards (improved..improving... but must keep on improving........)
We are ranked #18... Colts 25 Tennessee 5 Jags 21
Passing (We will always suck here if we dont do something with our secondary or they really need to step up.. play the fricken ball dont get burnt)
We are ranked #12... Colts 4 Tennessee 7 Jags 26
Rushing (Basically, when Mario or Demeco dont make the tackle and the runner gets to our corners and safety...we are doomed. They dont even make good open field tackles.. we really have to improve this if we are going to give our selves a chance to win. )
We are ranked #26... Colts 32 Tennessee 11 Jags 15
Receiving (What should be said about this?)
We are ranked #11... Colts 4 Tennessee 7 Jags 25
Sacks(I'm sorry to say but while its nice having mario always in the backfield getting half the sacks the others really really need to step up. If we can put pressure on their qbs its the best way to wear them down and frustrate them.. make them make quick passes. I mean **** we have a total of 5 sacks.. how many of those did Mario get? some teams have 18 total. We need big improvement here )
We are ranked #29... Colts 26 Tennessee 3 Jags 22
Scoring (Like I said before defense just has to put some points on the board period. Before I looked up this stat I thought we'd be dead last but we werent still bad thou.. Points matter on both sides and helps)
We are ranked #27... Colts 10 Tennessee 2 Jags 18
Touchdowns (????????????????? let someone else explain this please!)
We are ranked #30... Colts 5 Tennessee 3 Jags 18
Tackles (we have more missed tackles than tackles and I do not need a stat sheet for that. Please dont just bounce of the guy you are defending...we do it soooooo much... except for a few guys do I have to name them? )
We are ranked #24... Colts 6 Tennessee 4 Jags 20
Interception (I saw we made a couple not sure if that was just preseason though... but like I said our secondaries gotta step up big time and make some plays create turnovers. Even if they dont intercept thats fine at least knock the balls out the recievers hands... Reeves gotta play the ball better.. Faggins??? eh.. I still say we need better corners.. we only have 2 interceptions on the season)
We are ranked #23... Colts 23 Tennessee 1 Jags 9

These stats say it all and lets us know exactly whats needs to be improved. all I can say is that at least they are improving... but definately lots of work is needed on those corners and miss tackles those are what cost us games.. giving up those critical plays.. sigh.....

Go Texans!

stats are always skewed....

our pass defense is ranked better since the opposition is always playing with a lead and running the ball....

on the flip side, our run d has looked much better on the field but on paper is worse due to the above.

pass offense - our strong suit so no surprise there. rush offense is getting much better but still ranked towards the bottom of the league since were constantly passing to catch up.

The stat line i do like is Steve Slaton's. He is among the top in the league of all rookies in receiving yards, rushing yards and touchdowns. All with one less game with the early bye and only starting two games compared to the rest. best ypc average behind felix jones who has none other than barber loosening up the d. he keeps this up he has a good shot at ROY.

I love how people always get swept up in the glitzy stats yards per gain, passing yards per game, etc... It is always and forever will be about the points! How many touchdowns you give up vs. how many score. On defense we give up 32.5 points a game and on offense we score 20.8. Heres a little more to refreshen y'all on what can help create turnovers which stops scoring and could help our own scoring, Sacks. We are the 29th team in sacks on defense (4 by Mario, 5 total, weak) and we can't manage to get anymore! Oh yeah we are tied for 18th in the league for points for. So after seeing these stats what would be your conclusion to our #1 issue on the 2008 Houston Texans and how you could fix it if you only had 1 move? Mine would be get a real, mean hardcore blitzing defensive coordinator who takes risk sometimes and sells out to blitz. Because we already allow the the third most points per game in the league, so why not bring the pressure? Oh Yeah I want a real "Bull Rush", Bring on Rex Ryan DC for the Ravens and i dont care if it cost 20 million per year. Yes 20 million per year there is no salary cap on coaches and we have not been able to get a stud DC in here so do WHATEVER it takes to get him. No offense to Richard Smith but he sucks for the NFL. REX RYAN for DC!!!!!!!!!!!

The problem with the blitz is that when they do it nothing happens, except that there is less coverage back there. Even Ryans can't seem to get to the QB anymore on blitzes. I think the answer to that is starting Okam (more size on strong side) and resting Okoye and TJ each about half the time.

Oh yeah our defense is # 30 in points allowed, you dont win superbowls by giving up the least amount of yards its points!

The Texans blitz package cannot work when our defensive lineman are being blocked in one on one matchups.

Alot of you are to young to remember the Oilers and to us older fans this team looks alot like the pre Bum phillups years. Always firing the coach always losing always making excuses. What Bum did to turn this thing around was build a defensive line in a 3-4 and a core group of linebackers. They were the group that turned the Oilers into a team no wanted to play. I know this is a different game now of made for TV pitch and catch but the basics are still the same .They can't score they can't beat you. Bum used alot of good not great players but they all played as one unit. When he was first hired he used a slogan that the players and fans all used. He had the players all think of someone hanging over a cliff by a rope your teammates were the people you would most want on the other end of that rope. This carried over to the fans who threw thick and thin would hold the rope for the team. The Texans do not have the players who are willing to make the sacrifices it takes to be this kind of football team.

bear in mind that some teams have had their off weeks and some teams have played all of the weekends so some of the offensive stats are better than they look and some defensive stats look worse...except for the averages and the points given up of course.
