View Full Version : New Texan TD Song??

Hello everyone. Does anyone know how I can send an email to the front office about changing our TD song? I heard this song on a Brake Check commercial and the first thing I thought was how well this song would work for a TD celebration song. It took me quite a while to find who wrote it and what album it was on.
The song is called "Raised A Texan" and you can listen to it hear: www.myspace.com/132152677 (http://www.myspace.com/132152677)
I am going to take a vote from each of you until 12pm today to kind of show what Texan fans think.(I hope it turns out in favor of the song).
Here are some of the points I am going to make as to why this song should be our new TD song:
1. The old song says it is football time in Houston. That was great for 2002 but football has now been back for 5 years and it is now Texan time.
2. The chorus says it all. With all the fairweather fans who've left for other players playing for other teams to those who couldn't hack the losing seasons, it is only right to acknowledge the True Texans that are still in the stands and still watching on TV.
3. If you asked me what the words are to the current song, I would only tell you It's Football Time In Houston. However this song I know all the words in that chorus. They are easy to learn. When I sing them, the only thing I can think of is our Houston Texans and how being one is exclusive to us real fans.
4.This song is a real hand clapper. I can only imagine what a stadium full of Texans singing "I was Raised A Texan. I'm tried and true. I'm a Lone Star son of a gun baby, Red White and Blue!!!" sounds like. (maybe just loop that chorus part only)
5. Most importantly. The old song is a representative of the expansion franchise. Nothing from that seemed to work. We've changed, coaches, attitudes, and the face of the franchise with the hope of a new begining. It is only right that we try to change TD celebration with a new song.

What do yall think? Suggestions?

I agree with Vato. The song needs to be more upbeat, but I like the idea of using the chorus. Good luck. PS I do like the song!!! Just not for a TD song. I would actually perfer "ThunderStruck" by AC/DC

My problem of using a song that is a popular song from any band is that you have to make sure it relates to your team specifically. Any team can use the above mentioned song or any other song like that. Remember "Whoop There It Is"? Before long every team had that song playing in their stadium. Raised A Texan can only be played in Reliant for Texan fans.
I do agree that the CD version needs more of an up tempo beat. The one on Brake Check sounds a little more up tempo. Maybe our front office can find away to make that happen.

I think this is a good address to start with. I emailed them twice about some issues at the stadium and they responded to me on both occasions.

Haven't heard the song due to myspace being blocked at worked and not having internet at home, but if it's better than what we have, I say go for it. Plus, the Texans can modify it to fit the majority of the fan base.

Okay guys. We have 10 minutes. I hear everyone on their suggestions for other stuff but I am talking about this song.
Let me just ask this. Would it be an upgrade over the current TD song? My opinion when I go to games is that song does little to motivate fans at all. I never see anyone even singing the darn thing.

Personally...I would Rather hear the clay walker song
I listened to that song he wants.....
1. Too slow....not upbeat needs more rock and roll feel
2. He mentioned he didnt know the words to the Clay Walker song......they put the lyrics up on the
big screen last year when they played it.
3. They tried to replace Clay Walkers song with a rah rah fight song......most people wanted the Clay Walker song back..

The problem I've always had with Texans games is too much speaker music and not enough fan participation. Afterall, I'm not Clay Walker and I can't hit that note or any other note for that matter.
Maybe instead of a song, we do a cheer or haka.

IMO that is what I am talking about in terms of making a song our own. Are you ready for some football is Monday Night Football's theme. Not original.

Here is one of my main reason's why the Texans need to get rid of the Clay Walker song...I took my uncle, two cousins and girlfriend to the final game last year against the Brown's. This was all their first time to a Texans game, first time to an NFL game period. Well, after Taylor scored the first TD, we stood up, cheered, gave each other high five's and then they played that song. They ALL looked at me with a "what the ******" look and all I could do was say, "yeah, I know" and that pretty much just killed the cheering buzz. We just sat back down and waited for it to end. The 2nd TD by Maddox was basically the same thing, stood up, cheered, gave each other high fives then waited for the song to finish. I asked them what they thought of the song and they all said that it basically solidfies the stereotype that Texas is nothing but cows and oil fields, and they were right. The Texans should have a song that does embrace it's spirit but at the same time not be so yee-haw. We need to get with the times IMO.

Believe it or not most people still prefer the Clay Walker song to most of the stuff I see in this thread.

A rap song? Oh okay...

I can see a rock song. Most rap I hear sounds more like cruising music and doesn't get my adrenaline pumping. Maybe you can suggest a few and we can listen to them and give you feedback.

I couldn't have said it better. I don't know about you all but when I played football on Friday night's we didn't play a country song before the game. This song doesn't get me fired up at all, it makes me want to...well lets leave it at that. Why dont we use Boom by POD, or La Grange by ZZ Top. Use a song that gets you pumped up and gives you goosebumbs not a song that gets you ready for square dancing. Let the FO give us two choices from a couple of genres and let the people who buy the tickets decide.

"Like a Rock" by Bob Segar, my favorite song ever! It is a blend of Rock and Country, but I think that the tempo is Rock. I would love to hear that, if I could go a Texan game period, so I guess I don't get a vote because I have never been to a Texan game.

Sorry. Gonna have to vote no on the new song. WAAAAAY too slow, and so therefore not an upgrade over what we have currently.

I'm not the biggest fan of having taht song play after every TD (And I'm a HUGE country music fan), but the "raised a texan" song is not any better. If anything, it's worse because it's slower.

After TDs, it's time to celebrate with something that gets you pumped up! Or maybe just a fight song? Heck, I'm still impressed with the Eagles stadium all singing their fight song after every TD.

Bottom line, we NEED a new song.
New QB
New RB
New attitude.
Change is good.
A song that's easy to sing, something quick, something catchy...it's time to put the Clay Walker song down for good. Heck, La GRange is a great song, maybe something to that tune, right when it kicks off with the 'how how how how"

Wow. I certainly could've used this feedback on Friday.
I am a rap artist. I like rap music. Country is not my thing. This song appealed to me simply because it is about Texans and it is something that can only be used in Reliant Stadium league wide. You can't put this song in Cleveland, San Fran etc....You can put any of the other above mentioned songs.
I am just asking for the chorus part to be played, not the entire song. It can be redone too. There are plenty of artist in the Texas area that can colaborate on this.
If I just went based on what I liked compared to what I thought was exclusive to Texans then I would've asked for Neva Scared by Bone Crusher

I do appreciate the opinions and response though.

I have been a fan since the beggining and I have heard the current song many of times. They have already once tried to change the TD song and it was disliked, so they changed it back. I believe that the song should stay as it is. As far as knowing the words to the song, I know them all and I think that many other people to also, in fact I know they do because I hear it at every game! The song should stay as it is.[:)] Thanks for listening![:)]

Here is my reply and here is their response:
I've been a fan and member of
your website since the inception of the franchise and I remain loyal
more now than ever before.

Over the course of the year I've come across a Brake Check commercial
that had a song called Raised A Texan playing in the background. My
first thought when I heard that song was how great that song would be
for us Texan fans. I looked everywhere to find out who the artist is
and how I could get that song. I finally found it here:

www.myspace.com/132152677 The band is called Rivertrain the song Raised
A Texan is off the Abandoned CD.

I am asking that this become a part of our Houston Texan tradition in
some form or fashion. I prefer after TDs but I could see it being used
elsewhere possibly. However, I really want it for TDs. Here are some
of the reasons why and my suggestions of how it could be played.

1. The old song says it is football time in Houston. That was true when
the team first started. However football has been there for 5 years now
and I think it is Texan time now. We are established.

2. The chorus says it all. With all the fairweather fans that have left
for players that play for other teams to those that couldn't hack the
losing seasons, it is only right to acknowledge the True Texans that are
still in the stands and still watching on TV.

3. If you ask me what the words are to the current song, I will tell you
It's Football Time In Houston. That is it. However, I already know all
the words to the chorus in this song. While researching this song on
the internet I found several sites that had someone asking who the
artist was because they love this song. Sure the words to Clay Walker's
songs are on there however I don't go home with it being embedded in my
heart.

4. If sped up a tempo or two, like on the Brake Check commercial, this
song is a real hand clapper. I can only imagine what a stadium of
Texans singing " I was raised a Texan. I'm tried and true. I'm a Lone
Star son of a gun, baby. Red, White and Blue" sounds like. (Maybe just
loop that chorus part only)

5. Most importantly, it is a new era of Texan football. Gone are the
days of the expansion Texans. We have a new I'm A Texan attitude, with
new coaches, players and the face of the franchise is more different
than ever before with more excitement than ever before. It is time for
a change that could perhaps could be a tradition forever.

6. Many people whom I asked on our message board stated they would like
to see it somewhere in the game as it might not fit for TD celebrations.
That's fine because using other popular songs for different times during
the game don't make that time unique to us. Independence is one of the
characteristics that make up a Texan. Those other songs can be played
anywhere in the league (Remember Whoop There It Is?) . Raised A Texan
would be ours and ours alone. No other team can play that but us.

7. I know #s are important. I was able to get the vote of 9 message
board members. Of those 9, 55.5% said they would like the song to be
included in our Sunday festivities. The others made comments that if it
were more uptempo it could be considered for a TD song but thought it
might work elsewhere during the game. That is why I suggest seeing if
it could be sped up somehow with the help of the original artist or
something.

Texan fan till the day I die,
El Tejano
Thank you very much for writing in to us with your song suggestion. We
really appreciate the feedback and suggestions that we get from our
fans, especially when it is a suggestion like this. I had never heard
the song and you brought up some great points on why we should use it.
Each month in the off-season (more frequently in-season) we have an
internal group of people that meets just to discuss and brainstorm the
overall entertainment and atmosphere on gameday. Our next meeting is
next week, so I will bring this song to the group to get their opinion
and see if there is a way that we can use it on gameday. As you
mentioned, it would be great if the tempo was a little bit faster, but
we might be able to figure out a way to speed it up. There are also
some lyrics in it that might not be the most family oriented (beer and
shotguns), but if we just use the chorus, we could get around that.

Thanks again for your input and keep the ideas coming into fan feedback!

Sincerely,

Scott MacKerron
Director of Production and Entertainment

I personally didn't care for the song but still hate the current one.
How about running a contest for a new song. Houston has loads of new, up and coming, as well as established musical talent.
Have a contest to see who can come up with a new song and they can introduce it at the opening game "LIVE". We, the fans can vote for the Winner.
Sort of like a "Texans Idol" contest. Fans can vote from the top 12 on the Texans website and choose the Top Six. The Top Six will then appear on a local television channel and run a 6 week elimination run for the best. We can vote via website and call in. Have a ballot for the final 3 or 2 at the Texans-Dallas Pre-season game as well. And the winner is.........
SELECTED BY THE FANS! This could turn into a really fun "Texans Event".

I don't think we need ONE song to play after every touchdown. I think the best thing to do is ask the cheerleaders to pick the selections. I sit right in front of them and i can tell you..they look like they are struggling to dance to those country songs. Country is fine for the Rodeo. When i come to the games i want to cheer for the Texans watch the cheerleaders do their thing , not get ready for a square dance. I hate to say it but i went to the dallas game last year and man...they know how to do it and the cheerleaders look like they love the hip hop and upbeat music that they play for them to entertain the crowd. Bring clay walker music to the rodeo not to the football games. Maybe if we had drafted Vince he could have got the texans to change like he did the longhorn lockeroom..lol

Now Doug, rock songs have the same words, they just say it faster and you can't understand them most of the time, so you don't realize it. That takes more of a 7th grade education if you ask me.
That being said, it would be fun to have a chant of some kind that would get and keep everybody on their feet. I'm so corny, but I loved the "Houston Oilers" song. Something loike that but about our Texans would make me REAL happy!

both genres have talented originals like Willie Nelson and Robert Plant as well as talentless yokels like Toby Keith and Sebastian Bach....real music doesnt always have to have a story, much less have a story spoonfed to you. i guess my problem lies more with the campy lyrics than the actual musicianship.
fwiw, i dont think you need just one TD song. why not like 5 or 6 songs that you would play randomly? or an old school football chant like English Football, Redskins, or the Eagles have.

I know Mr. McNair is the owner of the Houston Texans, but I don't think he is up to date as far as musical taste of the fans.
I think the music he picked, "The Linemen", may be good for a NFL films presentation, but I don't think it translates very well in a live setting. Sure it maybe popular as a NFL film song and used on TV, but how did it do at a football game? Don't you think the music should be tested in front of Texans fans who go to the games first before it is played at a football game?
I know he picked it because it is horn based music which the pep band can play. I think the music should be up to date. This sounds outdated to me.
Here is the song, I found it on youtube. I think it is good for a pep band song .....
