Heyman | Astros to acquire Tyler Clippard from White Sox

            ByJon Heyman
The Houston Astros are making another move to their bullpen. They are set to acquire Tyler Clippard from the Chicago White Sox, sources told FanRag Sports on Sunday night.

News of the teams working on a deal was first reported by Ken Rosenthal of MLB Network and FOX Sports.

This is the second time that Clippard has been traded this season, as he was part of the deal in which the New York Yankees received Todd Frazier, David Robertson and Tommy Kahnle from the White Sox. After struggling during his time with the Yankees this season, going 1-5 with a 4.95 ERA in 36 innings pitched, Clippard was better during his brief time with the White Sox. Clippard made ten appearances in Chicago, going 1-1 with a 1.80 ERA in 11 appearances.

Clippard, who pitched a total of ten innings in Chicago, last appeared in a game on Saturday against Kansas City. Clippard pitched two-thirds of an inning in that outing, getting both outs to convert the save opportunity. He also made two appearances against the Astros last week, allowing three hits in two innings of work.

Overall, Tyler Clippard has a 2-6 record with a 4.27 ERA and three saves in eight opportunities in 2017.

With Ken Giles, who has converted 23 of his 26 save opportunities, firmly entrenched as the closer it’s unlikely that Clippard will have that role in Houston. The veteran joins a bullpen that currently ranks 19th in Major League Baseball with a 4.29 ERA, but its 24 victories are tied for the most in the majors.

The team added Francisco Liriano and moved him to the pen.

              DFA: Jordan Jankowski
The Astros optioned Reymin Guduan to Triple A to clear a spot on their active roster for Tyler Clippard, who will wear No. 19.

There's serious concern for @astros C/DH Evan Gattis, whose concussion symptoms didn't clear up in 7 days. He's been moved to 10-day DL.

This could be a real problem.

Heyman | Tigers and Astros discussing Verlander deal

                  ByJon Heyman
The Houston Astros and Detroit Tigers are discussing a possible deal to send former MVP and Cy Young-winning starting pitcher Justin Verlander to Houston, sources tell FanRag Sports.

Though the two continue to discuss a deal, completing one won’t be easy. Verlander, 34, is still due to make $28 million in both 2018 and 2019, and has a $22 million option for 2020 that kicks in based on his 2019 performance (a top-5 Cy Young finish triggers the option).

While Detroit is willing to pay some of that money depending on the return, said return would have to be good enough to convince Detroit to do so while also parting ways with an iconic player. Between the money remaining and figuring out the prospects Detroit would receive in return, a decent gap is still believed to exist in talks between the two sides.

Verlander, who has cleared waivers, also has full 10-5 no-trade rights and would have to agree to any deal.

The 2011 Cy Young and MVP winner is 8-7 this season with a 3.97 ERA, 1.359 WHIP and 8.8 strikeouts per nine innings. Overall, his numbers are down from his Cy Young runner-up 2016 season, when he posted a 3.04 ERA, AL-best 1.001 WHIP and 10 strikeouts per nine. That said, he has pitched far better of late. He is 3-1 with a 2.01 ERA, 0.942 WHIP and 9.8 strikeouts per nine in six second-half starts.

Verlander has spent his entire 13-year career in Detroit, posting a combined 181-113 record to go with a 3.50 ERA. He is a six-time All-Star and, along with winning the Cy Young and AL MVP in 2011, was named the 2006 AL Rookie of the Year. He also has four other top-5 Cy Young finishes to his name.

Detroit enters play on August 15 with a 53-65 record. Houston, which leads the AL West by 11.5 games with a record of 72-46, nonetheless came under fire for a relatively quiet trade deadline, acquiring only Francisco Liriano. Houston has since added Tyler Clippard to its bullpen as well.

Brian McCann isn't expected to need a rehab assignment before he's activated. He will increase baseball activities this weekend.

RHP Will Harris, C Evan Gattis and LHP Tony Sipp could begin minor league rehab assignments early next week.

McCullers' live BP could be his last step before a minor league rehab assignment.

Lance McCullers is scheduled to throw a live batting practice session Sunday at Minute Maid Park.

Carlos Correa took ground balls and ran the bases again today. He continues to increase his volume of hitting in the batting cages.

Chris Devenski has allowed four solo homers over his last 12 appearances. He hasnít been called upon for multiple innings since July 23rd.

Alex Bregman since July 1 has more walks (19) than strikeouts (18). Heís batting .313/.398/.597 over 144 at-bats in that span.

As I understand things, the Astros could revoke the waiver if they choose to do so. Though I don't fully understand all the ramifications of doing so.
