Sam Darnold posts record-breaking score in QB competition

    NFL.com
The buzz about USC quarterback Sam Darnold is only going to keep growing.

He made sure of that on Friday during a competition among the college quarterbacks serving as counselors at Nike's The Opening in Beaverton, Ore.

Darnold won the competition with the highest score ever recorded in its history, per USA TODAY's Paul Myerberg.

Of course, winning a skills competition when no one's wearing a helmet or pads does not make anyone a franchise QB. It is, however, a nice feather in Darnold's cap, considering he had the all-time best score in an event that hosts some of the top prospects at the position each year.

The Trojans redshirt sophomore is considered one of college football's top talents, and he was the talk of the NFL Scouting Combine earlier this year, even though he wasn't eligible for the 2017 draft and won't be available until 2018 at the earliest.

His ascent started last fall, when he became the starter in Week 4 and went on to lead the Trojans to nine straight wins to close out the season, including a 5-touchdown performance against Penn State in the Rose Bowl.

NFL.com analyst Daniel Jeremiah has likened him to Andrew Luck.

On Friday, a good offseason for the USC star got a little better.

I see a drop off in production this year for him. I bet he isn't a top 5 pick next year.

Darnold has a bit of a loop in his motion. Nothing as dramatic as Bortles', but something to work out.

Pretty good ball placement so far.
