Schefter: Elliott 'ready for a long battle'
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Ezekiel Elliott is "ready for a long battle" regarding his six-game suspension.

Elliott already released a statement saying he will appeal, but Schefter reports that "might just be [the] first step in an ongoing ordeal," suggesting Zeke is willing to go to court to fight the ban. Elliott is worth an early-round fantasy pick even with the suspension looming, but it remains possible he either serves a lesser ban this year or is able to postpone the suspension the entire season. Like Le'Veon Bell last year, Elliott will likely end up a value when it is all said and done.

Ryan Tannehill placed on injured reserve
Dolphins placed QB Ryan Tannehill on injured reserve on injured reserve with a torn ACL, ending his season.

After opting not to undergo surgery last offseason with a partially torn ACL, Tannehill is choosing the opposite this time around. He will likely be ready to go for training camp next season. Jay Cutler will take over as the starting quarterback. Cutler has supported numerous top-24 fantasy receivers in his career, so fantasy players should not bump Dolphins skill players too far down their boards.

Joe Mixon dazzles with 42 yards on 7 touches
Joe Mixon rushed six times for 31 yards and caught an 11-yard pass in the Bengals' preseason opener.

Jeremy Hill played first, but Mixon mixed in twice on the Bengals' opening drive and appears to be a part of the first-team offense, even if he's not yet the "starter." Mixon showed nifty feet and superb vision on his carries and turned a short checkdown in the flat into an 11-yard gain by breaking a pair of open-field tackles. The rookie also executed in blitz pickup. It's only a matter of time before Mixon takes over this backfield.

Stunner: Rams get Sammy Watkins from Bills
Rams acquired WR Sammy Watkins and a 2018 sixth-round pick from the Bills in exchange for CB E.J. Gaines and a 2018 second-round pick.

Whoa. Watkins was said to be in the mix for the Rams at No. 2 overall in the 2014 draft, but they opted to take mega bust LT Greg Robinson instead. With coach Sean McVay now in town, he knew he needed a legit No. 1 wideout, and Watkins is that when healthy. "When healthy" are the key words. He's missed 11 games over the past two seasons due to foot problems and is entering the final year of his contract. The Rams no longer have the ability to exercise his 2018 option after the Bills declined it earlier this offseason. However, the Rams didn't trade for a one-year rental. They'll either tag or extend Watkins. This spells doom for Tavon Austin's post-2017 tenure in L.A. For fantasy purposes, Watkins doesn't take much of a hit going from a run-dominant offense to another. He'll be Jared Goff's top wideout as a strong WR2 with upside for more if Goff takes steps forward.

Patrick Mahomes promoted to second string
Chiefs first-round QB Patrick Mahomes worked ahead of Tyler Bray at Sunday's practice.

Mahomes had been operating as the Chiefs' No. 3 quarterback, but he seems to have moved ahead of Bray for backup duties behind Alex Smith. The rookie impressed in his preseason debut Friday night, completing 7-of-9 attempts for 49 yards and a touchdown. Mahomes may not leap Smith in year one, but he's set up to be the Chiefs' starter in 2018.

Bills promote rookie Peterman to 2nd team
Fifth-round pick Nathan Peterman was promoted to the Bills' second-team offense during Sunday's practice.

T.J. Yates struggled in the preseason opener, so Peterman is getting a shot to move up the depth chart. Peterman, who drew comparisons to Kirk Cousins during the pre-draft phase, engineered a touchdown drive and showed plus mobility in Thursday night's exhibition bout with the Vikings. This is a competition to monitor in deeper two-quarterback leagues and perhaps in Dynasty formats. The Bills have not made any long-term commitments to Tyrod Taylor.

Rico Gathers scores for second straight game
Cowboys TE Rico Gathers caught 4-of-6 targets for 47 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's preseason game.

It was the converted basketball player's second straight preseason game with a score. He's now up to 7/106/2 on the summer, and increasingly looking like someone who is going to force himself onto the 53-man roster. Gathers doesn't have a legitimate 2017 path to re-draft value behind Jason Witten, but is absolutely someone who needs to be scooped up in Dynasty leagues.

    No longer a sleeper...

Lions install Golladay with 1st-team offense
Third-round pick Kenny Golladay worked primarily with the first-team offense for the first time in training camp Wednesday.

To this point, Golladay had practiced primarily with Jake Rudock and the second team. Golladay has outplayed second-team status, and is now getting a long look with the Matthew Stafford group. Beat writer Dave Birkett expects Golden Tate to move to slot receiver if Golladay wins a starting outside job across from Marvin Jones. Golladay remains a better Dynasty than re-draft investment, but it's past time we took him seriously as a 2017 fantasy factor.

Odell Beckham's MRI confirms ankle sprain
Odell Beckham's MRI confirmed a sprained ankle.

The Giants haven't revealed all the details surrounding his injury, though it appears Beckham was able to avoid the dreaded high-ankle sprain. "We'll take it day by day and see how they respond to treatment," said coach Ben McAdoo, who was referring to both Beckham and Brandon Marshall (shoulder). Both players were injured in Monday night's preseason game against Cleveland.

Rob Gronkowski changes diet, cuts out booze

Rob Gronkowski has adopted "parts of Tom Brady's diet" while also cutting out alcohol and coffee.

It's unclear what the diet consist of, but Brady has been known as one of the bigger-name NFL players to go heavily vegan. The more notable thing for Gronk is cutting out the beer -- just during the season -- as he's long been the league's lovable party animal. On top of the dietary changes, Gronkowski also played in his first preseason game last week since 2012. Now 28, he knew he had to make some changes to prolong his career and stay healthy in the present. If healthy, Gronkowski is a favorite to lead the league in touchdowns.
