Wes Welker Expected to Join the Texans

    PATRICK STARR
    StateOfTheTexans.com
With the Houston Texans entering the evaluation mode of their roster and adding to their coaching staff, a source close to the situation expects Wes Welker to be added to the coaching personnel in the near future. Welker is expected to be part of the offensive staff, helping the wide receiver group and handle other offensive duties assigned. All signs are pointed to Welker joining the staff for the 2017 season and his knowledge of the wide receiver position in this offense is an added plus.

Welker has no prior coaching experience but has been weighing opportunities to enter the coaching ranks. It appears he will do that with familiar faces in Houston. Coach Bill O’Brien was Welker’s position coach with the New England Patriots and his offensive coordinator for a season before O'Brien left for Penn State. Also, former teammates Mike Vrabel and Larry Izzo are currently on the Texans staff which make the situation for Welker a much easier transition.

Welker amassed 9,924 receiving yards with 50 touchdowns for his career with 7,459 yards and 37 touchdowns coming from his days with the Patriots.

    Tom Pelissero‏ @TomPelissero
Wes Welker is here in Mobile with the #Texans staff. Has been considering coaching opportunities. Played under Bill O'Brien with #Patriots.
Surprised still no confirmation from other media.

I guess Andre J is not the direction we are going with WR coach? Let's take the steroid guy instead.

Don't be surprised when Welker agrees to come aboard, with one proviso .... draft Ryan Switzer !

I like this move - now we just have to wait to see if it bears fruit.

It just doesn't matter who coaches, who plays or anything. The Texans have a loosing persona that will never change, thank you 94-95 Houston Rockets for our "One & Only Title"

                Not so fast.
Houston Dynamo won titles in 2006 and 2007
Houston Energy won titles in 2000 -01- and 02
The Sugarland Skeeters won in 2016
The Texas Colts won in 2014 and 2016
                The Regals won in 2013
The Texas Lady Jaguars won in 2015.
Houston Aeros won in 1999 and 2003.
The Gordie Howe Aeros were quite the team back in the mid seventies.

So maybe Texas mens football has nothing, but our lady football teams are Champions with 3 titles in the last 4 years.

Let's not forget Phi Slamma Jamma either.

As soon as we can command more ratings and generate more money for the nfl than the Pats and Steelers and Ravens, then we will see some love.

Photo: Tim Warner, For The Chronicle

Texans' DeAndre Hopkins excited to learn from Wes Welker

When the Texans hired former New England Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker as an assistant coach, they did so with the hope that he would impart a lot of knowledge to their young receiving corps.

The five-time Pro Bowl wide receiver has been putting that into practice this week as the Texans opened their organized team activities. The 35-year-old offensive assistant and special-teams assistant is helping receivers coach John Perry work with a talented group headlined by Pro Bowl alternate wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins.

"It's great learning from a guy like Wes who has had experience in this league, who knows every aspect, not just from a player standpoint but also from a coach as of now," Hopkins said. "He has played with some of the best, so having his knowledge out here helps a lot."

The former Patriots, Denver Broncos and Miami Dolphins starter drew heavy praise from New England coach Bill Belichick this offseason as the latest hire by Texans coach Bill O'Brien.

"He was actually our backup kicker," Belichick said. "He kicked in a game when we had an injury, but again Wes is a football guy. Whatever we asked him to do, block, run routes, return kicks, help us out in any way possible, Wes, was a good football player.

"He just had a great feel for where the quarterback wanted to throw him the ball, where he should be in the passing game relative to where other people were. I'm sure coach O'Brien recognized that as well from coaching him, and I'm sure he'll do a great job in whatever they ask him to do."
If you're not following the Astros, you are doing Houston sports wrong.
